Couples can make New Year's Eve memorable without fancy plans or expensive outings.

There is no need to plan an expensive night on the town to have a fun and memorable New Year’s Eve. Married couples can share a night at home together reminiscing about the early days of their dating or marriage to be close together on New Year’s Eve.

Plan a Special Night

Some married couples stay in on New Year’s to save money and others have trouble finding a babysitter or enjoying fancy parties. Regardless of the reason why the couple is staying home, choose one of the following ideas for a night to remember.

Recreate a Date Night

One of the easiest ways to spend New Year’s Eve is to recreate an old date night. Choose a movie or several movies that rekindle special memories as a couple. A movie from a first date or special holiday is a good choice, as is a movie that both partners enjoyed. Carry in dinner from a favorite restaurant from earlier in the relationship. If that isn’t possible, choose a meal that is similar to ones both partners enjoyed together. For example, a couple who spent a lot of dates at an Italian restaurant may want to carry in or prepare an Italian dinner. Spend the night cuddled on the couch watching old movies and reminiscing.

Celebrate New Year’s in Style

Bringing in the features of a fancy party is an option for married couples who want to celebrate New Year’s Eve but have to stay home. Consider which parts of a fancy party are the most special. Is it dressing up or eating fancy food? Is it the champagne or the dancing? Pick and choose which parts are the most meaningful and recreate them as a couple. Getting dressed up and dancing in the living room can be special with mood lighting and champagne. Planning and preparing fancy appetizers together can be a nice way to share time together before midnight.

Relive Old Memories on New Year's Eve

Another way for married couples to spend New Year’s Eve at is to look at old photos and videos. Pull out the wedding photo album and video and reminisce about the wedding day. Tell each other stories that the other person may not know.

What went into preparing the bride? Who was there and did anything funny happen? What was the groom doing prior to the wedding? What was he experiencing at the alter while waiting for the wedding to begin? Or look at other pictures from when the couple was dating or early in the marriage. What is different? What is the same?

Reminiscing can be a great way to regain some of the closeness that can be lost when both partners are so busy. It can also be a great way to plan ahead for the coming year. Take this time to set some goals, whether it is to create a household budget, share a special trip or work to improve communication.

No matter whether a married couple is staying home for New Year’s Eve by choice or from necessity, it is possible to have a special and memorable night. No matter how the night is spent, don’t forget to turn on Dick Clark’s New Year's Rockin’ Eve, sing "Auld Lang Syne," and share a midnight kiss with each other.
