Christmas Gifts for Him

Holiday Presents Men Would Like to Receive

Oct 12, 2009 Amy Wingfield

A gift just for him should reflect a man's interests. Some men like computer games and electronics, others like fishing, NASCAR or sports. Do the research. Choose wisely.

Choosing gifts for men is almost a science. Most men are logical, analytical and hands-on. No matter what the man's interest might be, most prefer gifts that are entertaining and useful.

What Men Want for Christmas:

Widescreen TV: If a man is still watching the old console TV, put him out of his misery. Buy a widescreen TV at least 26 inches or larger. Widescreen is the preferred shape of HDTV, and HDTV is the future of television media. With a wide-screen TV, families can watch movies, sporting events and most prime-time dramas and sitcoms in the format in which they were meant to be seen. Also, playing games on a widescreen TV is similar to being in an arcade.

Computers : A man's computer, whether it be desktop or a laptop, is all about power, speed, memory and storage. Whatever a man is interested in, he's going to want a lot of it. He'll also prefer the highest quality possible. If a computer is on the man's list this year, don't skimp. Get the best. Dell and HP usually put out the highest quality computers.

Complete systems, whether desktop or laptop, can be purchased for as low as $300 or can cost thousands of dollars. Try to choose a system that meets his needs but has really cool features. Go ahead and buy the flatscreen monitor. Make sure it's 17 inches or bigger. Don't forget the CD/DVD burner and player. Think wireless as much as possible for a desktop. Wireless keyboards and a wireless mouse are great choices. If choosing a laptop , look for one with at least 2 GB of memory, a CD/DVD player, built in camera, 7-in-1 media card reader and at least a 6 cell battery that will last about 4.5 hrs on one charge.

Xbox, Playstation 3 or Wii: Console game systems are fun games the whole family can enjoy. The average cost of one of these systems is about $300. It not only plays games but can be the family DVD player as well. There are a variety of game choices out there: educational, sports, adventure, role playing, board games, even music. The two most popular music games out right now are called Guitar Hero 5 and Beatles Rock Band. In both games, players can pretend to be a rock star right in their own living room. Game prices vary.

Hand Held Games: For a portable game system that will double as a music and movie or TV player, consider getting one of these. The two most popular are the Nintendo DSi and the PSP 3000. There's also the Apple iPod but it's more of hand held computer and not just a portable game system. Both the Nintendo DSi and PSP 3000 play games and movies. The DSi has a built in camera.

Cell Phone: Almost every man in the world has a cell phone now or wants one. The two most popular ones are the iPhone and the Blackberry. The more a phone can do, the popular it us. Most men want a phone that gets great reception, play games and music and take pictures.

Electric Razor or Beard trimmer: This is a staple in most male households. There are many styles and brands out there. Go beyond the norm this year with an all in one personal groomer. Trim, shave and detail with one product instead of three.

DVDs and CDs: Consider buying movies and music this year. The average cost of either a CD or a DVD is $10-$20 each. It's sometimes hard to choose CDs for a man unless he tells you what kind of music he likes. DVDs, on the other hand, are simplier to purchase. With the constant release of new media, it's hard to go wrong with DVDs. Consider buying whole sets of his favorite TV series, movie trilogy or sports events this year.

Other Men's Gifts to Consider

While big ticket items put a big smile on a man's face, don't forget about little things he might enjoy.

The gamer or computer professional can always use blank CDs and DVDs. An avid fisherman can always use new tackle or a new tackle box. Help the golfer do 18 holes with new golf balls and tees. Drive the car fanatic wild with car accessories and NASCAR gear. Big or small gifts, he'll enjoy them all.
