Married Couples Can Make Valentines to Save Money

Homemade Valentines are the perfect way for married couples to save money while saying, "I love you" on Valentine's Day.

Married couples can personalize framed photos, create a prayer or Scripture journal and offer love coupons to show a spouse that they are loved on Valentine’s Day and all year long.

Personalize a Photo for a Spouse

A photo together, a blank mat and an inexpensive frame are all that’s needed to make a special Valentine’s Day gift. If it has been a while since the couple had a photo taken together, choose one from earlier in the relationship at an event that brings back fond memories. “Surround the picture with written compliments,” suggests Dena Dyer in "Gifts That Money Can’t Buy." “List the qualities you adore about him or her, including the little things that usually go unnoticed,” she says.

Make a Prayer or Scripture Journal

When expressing feelings to a loved one is difficult, try creating a prayer journal or Scripture journal instead. “Make a hand-written prayer journal that specifies requests you've made for your mate,” Dyer suggests. Use construction paper to make a little book with prayer requests on each page.

In Becoming the Woman of His Dreams [Harvest House Publishers, 2005], author Sharon Jaynes suggests writing notes about a spouse based in Scripture. She suggests using quotes such as “You are a dearly loved child or God” or “You are God’s masterpiece.” Use quotes that reflect the spouse’s values or that describe him or her. Many Bibles include indexes that can help locate applicable quotes on marriage and love. Websites with Bible databases are also helpful.

Make a Book of Love Coupons

Love coupons are one of the most popular homemade gifts for spouses. Love coupons are vouchers that allow spouses to “cash in” the coupon for a specified gift. Love coupons can be fun, romantic or sexy. Brainstorm ideas that are fun for both partners then select five to 10 ideas. Keep in mind that the more specific the love coupon is, the more likely it will be used. Print out the love coupons on white paper then glue to pink or red construction paper and cut them out. Package love coupons in an envelope or gift box.

Homemade Valentines can express a heartfelt appreciation for a husband or wife on Valentine’s Day. Personalized framed photos, prayer or Scripture journals and love coupons are a great way for married couples to say, “I love you.”
