Valentine's Day can catapult you into the romantic arena, if you give the holiday a chance to work its magic.

After years of marriage, it's sometimes hard to find a special way to celebrate Valentine's Day. The limitations of a well-entrenched daily routine, work stresses, and children can sap time and energy from even the most dedicated Valentine's revelers.

Long married couples understand the challenge of keeping the spark alive. If you know how to use it, Valentine's Day can provide a bridge to intimacy. Don't sell it short.

Put Family Responsibilities on the Back Burner

Children love the hearts and candy, but don't forget that this is also a grownup holiday. Make your spouse the focus of this special day.

Your memories of past romantic encounters with your spouse have the power to impact your life today. Valentine's day gives you an easy means of recalling and using the things about your spouse that so attracted you in the beginning to create intimate moments in the here and now. Those who complain that it's only a marketing ploy are missing the point.

Invoke the Past to Create a Wonderful Moment

Smells and sounds are very evocative, and the human brain makes strong associations between smells, sounds, and memory. Pick a romantic moment from your shared past and recreate the smells and sounds of it for your spouse. Was there a favorite song playing on that perfect weekend in Hawaii; were there roses in the room, or the scent of geraniums from your mother's garden?

Little Things Mean A Lot

If you are half of a couple, you know the things in your shared life that have meaning. Make a gesture that tells your spouse that you've been paying attention. Carry in the groceries; place a note in his coat pocket to stumble on when he reaches for his wallet. Offer to go to the movies, or dig the flowerbed she's been asking for. Accompany him to the game, or race, or whatever venue inspires his passion.

Pay Attention to Your Appearance on Valentine's Day

If you want to have a bang up Valentine's Day, give your mate something different to look at. If you are a T-shirt and jeans sort of person, wear something colorful and a little out of character. This is the time to get his or her attention. Bright colors and soft, alluring fabrics can set the tone for the day, so get started looking for an addition to your wardrobe that will tell your spouse that something different is afoot. It doesn't have to be expensive, frilly, or red, but an attractive shirt in a soft, sensual fabric, or a pastel bra strap peeking out from a plain white blouse will work wonders.

The key to the potential of Valentine's Day is that people are expecting romance. It's at the forefront of our collective consciousness, so it won't be difficult to create an intimate moment with a subtle suggestion. The kinds of hints that would go unnoticed on any other day are bound to be heard loud and clear.

Valentine's Day is a great time to use the memories of your relationship to help you turn the long association you have with your spouse into a great day or evening. This is one of the advantages you have over those who are new to love. Your five senses will help you create an environment rich with the history that the two of you share. Once those memories are invoked, you can use them to build new, fresh reasons to celebrate.
