Married couples can recreate their first date, pledge to keep their relationship healthy or renew their wedding vows to celebrate Valentine's Day.

Valentine’s Day is not only a significant day for young lovers or the newly married. Long-time married couples should use the occasion to rekindle the romance and passion they experienced in the early years of their courtship and marriage as well. Here are some romantic and practical ideas to make the day ultra special and memorable.

Recreate the First Date

Take a trip down memory lane by recreating your first date. Those with a good memory will have no problem with this. Try recalling what you talked about, what you ordered for dinner, what you wore, what flowers he gave you, what music was played, etc, and relive those magical moments once more. Take out old photos of time spent together, view and muse over them. If possible, go back to the same spot/restaurant/cinema where you both shared happy memories. If the first date wasn’t all that great, try recreating another more romantic occasion.

Pledge to Keep Relationship Healthy

After years of marriage, it’s normal to feel jaded in the relationship every now and then. Use the occasion to make a pledge to recommit yourselves to the marriage and be more attentive and aware of each other’s needs. Couples can improve their marriage by reading books, listening to CDs or even get counseling if there is a need.

Renew Wedding Vows

Couples who are truly committed to each other can also opt to renew their wedding vows. And there’s no better day to do it than on Valentine’s Day. Arrange this ceremony in advance, though, as time is needed to find a wedding celebrant and venue as well as send out invitations. However, you can keep this simple by asking a close friend or relative to officiate the vows as it doesn’t have to be a legally binding ceremony if you were already legally married the first time.

Write Each Other Love Letters

Love letters for a loved one are always cherished. So why not write each other love letters. Be creative. Make it funny, romantic or racy. Don’t stop at just one. Write two, five or even 10 letters if you have the time and imagination. Other ways to send love messages is by leaving little heart-shaped love notes in various spots around the house, in his lunchbox, in her handbag, in the car seat or by sending sizzling text messages. Do this all year round, not just on Valentine’s Day to keep the fire burning!

Enjoy a Weekend Getaway

A romantic weekend getaway just for the two of you is a great way to celebrate Valentine’s Day too. Plan ahead. Book the hotel and arrange to leave the kids in the care of a trusted family member or a hired babysitter while you are away enjoying each other’s company blissfully.

Have Family Fun

Children can be included in Valentine’s Day fun too. Have a family picnic instead or help children make Valentine’s Day cards for their friends, teachers or Mum and Dad. Encourage the children to share and show their love for their siblings, parents, grandparents, teachers, friends and even pets.

It’s a definitely a wise move for married couples to keep the romance alive on Valentine’s Day. Make it more special by reliving old happy memories, reaffirming the relationships through pledges and renewal of wedding vows, sending each other love letters, going away for a weekend or celebrating the day as a family.
